10 Tips (And 1 Freebie) That Make Grocery Shopping Easier

Grocery Shopping Made Easy

Does anyone else just really dislike going to the grocery store? I never really enjoyed it to begin with, and Iโ€™ve enjoyed it even less so after being the main shopper for our family of 6 for almost 3 decades. But unfortunately, shopping for food and household supplies is a pretty crucial task, so why not make it a little easier on ourselves?

Today Iโ€™ll be sharing 10 tips that can help improve your grocery shopping experience. Whether youโ€™re looking to save time, save money, or save yourself a headache, youโ€™ll find the tips you need to do it in this post.

And donโ€™t miss out on the special free printable I have for you at the bottom of this post!

10 Ways To Make Grocery Shopping Easier

Grocery Shopping Made Easy

1. Subscribe & Save

Try using Amazon programs like Subscribe & Save to get non-perishable items delivered right to your door. You can buy canned goods, snacks, toilet paper, breakfast cereal, trash bags, cleaning supplies, and more! Youโ€™ll have a shorter list when you go to the grocery store, so you can get in and out faster.

2. Get It Delivered

Check to see if any of your local grocery stores offer a delivery service or curbside pickup. You can take your time shopping online for the stuff you need, without the hassle and stress of being in the store.

Then you can swing by the store later to pick up your order or have someone bring it right to your door! These services do cost a few extra dollars, but you may end up saving money if you’re normally prone to impulse buys. ;-)

3. Keep Track As You Shop

Have you ever gone through the checkout line at the store, only to get shocked by how much your groceries cost? Avoid the surprise at the end of your shopping trip by keeping a running tally of how much youโ€™re spending. Itโ€™ll help you make smart spending decisions, and youโ€™ll avoid that unpleasant moment of shock in the checkout line.

4. Donโ€™t Shop Hungry!

Plan your grocery shopping trips to take place after a meal, or at least an hour or two before the next one. If you shop when youโ€™re hungry, youโ€™re much more likely come away with food and snacks you didnโ€™t plan on buying! Shopping when youโ€™re satiated is good for your wallet, and itโ€™s good for your waistline too.

5. Pick The Shortest Line

No one likes waiting in a long line at the checkout stand. According to math teacher Dan Meyer, itโ€™s best to choose the line with the least amount of people in it, regardless of how full their carts or baskets might be.

His suggestions is based on the idea that it takes at least a minute or two to check someone out, even if theyโ€™re buying just a couple of things. Each item only adds about 3 seconds to the total checkout time, so a cart full of items doesnโ€™t actually take that much longer to scan.

6. Go When Itโ€™s Less Busy

I like to plan my grocery shopping trips for less busy times, like weekend mornings or weekday evenings. I generally have a better, less stressful experience shopping if Iโ€™m not surrounded by crowds!

7. Make It Fun

Do whatever you can to make your shopping trips more enjoyable. If youโ€™re big into audiobooks or podcasts, listen to one while you shop, or make a playlist of your favorite songs.

8. Branch Out

We all have our favorite food brands that we gravitate towards while we shop, but try branching out! You never know whatโ€™s out there in terms of quality and price unless youโ€™re willing to give it a try.

9. Find The Best Deals

If youโ€™re serious about saving money on your groceries, consider using a service like Deals to Meals. Iโ€™ve used Deals to Meals in the past to find sales, special offers, and deals at grocery stores in my area, and I really liked that they indicated how good each price was so I could decide when to stock up.

There are plenty of these sorts of services online and in app form, so find one you like and use it!

10. Always Make A List

I rarely go to the grocery store without a list. Iโ€™ve learned that if I donโ€™t have a list, I come out of the store will none of the stuff that I did need, and all of the stuff that I didnโ€™t. You can make your list even more useful by sorting your groceries out by category. Youโ€™ll be much less likely to overlook an item if youโ€™re getting all of your produce items at the same time!

  1. I use the apps, especially walmart. When i go there, I shop by aisle as it shows me what is on each aisle, and I check it off my list. I also use grocery IQ for costco which doesnโ€™t have app.
Thanks for the tips! Love this blog!

  2. I do a similar system on my iPhone. I use the Notes app with the check-off feature. I have our typical items categorized into sections based on the floor plan of the store we frequent.

We have lots of different stores so they’re all listed. As we need something, maybe a nail-gun that will go beneath Home Depot. Perhaps we need batteries that will go beneath Costco. Otherwise the grocery store is Ralph’s and it looks like Deli, Dairy/Cooler, Bread, Beverages, Produce, Meals, Frozen, Staples, Pharmacy, Non-Grocery. If it has a check-mark, we don’t need it. Then when I get it, I check it off.

I try to carry as little as possible. So all I carry in is my phone (which has a case with my cards in it – although I typically use Apple-Pay) and my bags!!

  3. #5 Picking the shortest line doesn’t work when the person with the cart packed full is unloading their goods with one hand while yakking on their phone with the other. I’ll just stick to the self checkout, thank you.

    • Ditto! I love self-checkout!! I prefer to bag my own groceries as todays younger employees haven’t gotten the memo delicate items don’t go on the bottom!!

  4. Jillee–you showcased some reusable, sturdy grocery boxes/bags in a former newsletter. I bought them and they are invaluable! I want to buy some for my daughter, but I can’t find them again. They were from Amazon and they were brown. Can you point me in the right direction?

    • I use Clever Made collapsable totes, available on Amazon in various sizes. I keep two in the car and one in the pickup to keep shopping contained while moving. I also keep insulated bags in there for the frozen/refrigerated goods.

  5. I maybe am weird. I actually enjoy grocery shopping. I look forward to it. I start to my plan my next trip as soon as I get home from one shopping trip. I have to travel about 80 miles round trip to do a big shopping so I make a day of it.

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one! I love grocery shopping. Friday is my day off, so I go to the grocery store right after dropping my son off at school. Kroger is virtually a ghost town at 7:45 a.m. I also make a game out of it and see how little I can spend. I follow Dave Ramsey’s envelope system and only carry a certain amount of cash with me in my “grocery envelope,” so I’m not tempted to go over because I know I can’t! Also, when the store is quiet and I’m not constantly running into people I know and stopping to chat, I can really focus on what I am doing and get the best deals!

  8. Thanks for the tips! I keep a list hanging in my kitchen on a clipboard all the time. The list has all my regular items printed in sections by aisle (with some blank lines in each section for unusual items), and throughout the week, I highlight things I need, so when it’s time to go, my list is ready, and it’s easy to get through the store fast without forgetting things.

  9. thanks for the great suggestions. I will be using some of them right away. I guess Iโ€™m weird because I actually like grocery shopping. I do use a list on my phone, and app called Buy Me a Pie!. Itโ€™s free and has lists to choose from or you can add things to the list . And I almost always have my phone with me. When I leave the house itโ€™s in my purse or in my pocket. When I kept a list on the refrigerator, or on a sheet of paper, I would often leave it at home somewhere. Keep up the good suggestions, I look forward to them every day and pass information along to others as well as your site.

  10. I make a list every week and always miss a few items. The problem is not the list, it is the timing of when I go shopping; live in a senior complex where a bus takes us shopping on a monday (that is when all the aisles are getting restocked) and there is so many people there that I forget what aisles to avoid. I have my list done to the aisles I go down first. The worst is trying to get a worker to help me reach items that are so high that I can’t view them. I did call to complain and the response “someone will help you!” Try checking out eggplant where you can’t reach it to view!
